Can't Merge or Split a Protected PDF?
Password-protected PDFs are not processed by this site's Merge PDF and Split PDF. This site does not remove passwords. This guide describes what appears on screen and what to do whether or not you know the password.

What happens when I add a protected PDF?
When we added a password-protected test PDF, this notice appeared: "Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged or split. Please save a copy without the password and try again."
- Merge: The protected file appears in the list but is left out of the merge. When we added 2 normal PDFs and 1 protected PDF, the button read "Merge PDF (2 files · 3 pages)", counting only the 2 normal files.
- Split: The notice appears under the file name and it cannot be split.
- Compress: The compress screen does not process protected PDFs either; its button read "Compress (0)".
What if I know the password?
Make a copy without the password and add that copy instead.
- Open the file in the PDF program you use and enter the password.
- Look in that program's document security (properties) settings for a way to turn off the password requirement and save. Menu names and locations differ by program and version. We did not test this step with this site's tools, so please check the program's official help.
- Keep the original as it is and save the passwordless copy separately.
- Add the copy to Merge PDF or Split PDF.
What if I do not know the password?
Ask the person who sent or created the file for a copy without a password. This site has no feature that opens a PDF whose password you do not know, and this guide does not explain how. Only handle files you are entitled to open.
When this does not work
- Without the password, you cannot merge, split or compress the file.
- Merge/split and conversion differ. This site's PDF to Excel can convert a PDF if you know the password used to open it and enter it. → FAQ
- For bookmarks and form fields that may not survive a merge, see How to merge several PDFs into one.
