PDF to PowerPoint: Picture Slides or Editable Slides?
There are two ways to turn a PDF into PowerPoint (.pptx): picture slides, where each page becomes one picture, and editable slides, where text becomes text boxes. This guide explains the difference and how to choose. We converted the same test PDF both ways with this site's PDF to PowerPoint and opened the inside of each file.

How do the two types differ?
We converted a 2-page test statement both ways and looked inside the files:
| Picture slides (marked recommended) | Editable | |
|---|---|---|
| Slide contents | One picture per page, no text boxes | 12–15 text boxes (shapes) and 1 table per page, no pictures |
| Editing text | Not possible | Possible |
| Look | The page is placed as a picture (up to 3000px) so it looks like the PDF | Text and tables are rebuilt, so it may look slightly different |
| Scanned PDF | Converted (1 test scan, 669 KB) | Not possible ("Please use picture slides") |
| Test file size (2 pages) | 199 KB | 194 KB |
Which one should I pick?
If you do not need to edit the text, pick picture slides; if you need to edit text or rewrite tables, pick editable.
- To present as is, or when keeping the look matters, use picture slides. Scanned and photographed PDFs work this way too.
- To change numbers or wording and reuse the material, use editable. Tables become PowerPoint tables.
Steps to convert
- Open PDF to PowerPoint.
- Before adding a file, choose a Slide type: picture slides or editable.
- Add the PDF. You will see a result such as "Done · 2 pages · 199 KB".
- Click Download PowerPoint file (or download several as a ZIP).
- Open the file and check that the number of slides equals the number of PDF pages.
- If you chose editable, check line breaks in text boxes, table cells and fonts.
When this does not work
- Editable cannot be used for scans. Make scanned (image) PDFs as picture slides. If a PDF mixes in scanned pages, the editable type leaves those pages out.
- With editable slides, the on-screen note says the layout may shift slightly if a font is missing or spacing differs.
- For picture slides, the slide size is the size of the first page. We confirmed only that rule; we did not test a PDF whose pages have different sizes.
- Our check looked at the inside of the files. How they look in the actual PowerPoint application was not something we checked.
